The Sustainable Development Goals

What is United Nation? I think most of you had read it before in your secondary school history textbook. UN (United Nation) is an intergovernmental organization tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order. Besides that, we also know that UN was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II with the aim of preventing another such conflict.

Now let us know more about the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals that launched by the United Nation. Negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda began in January 2015 and ended in August 2015. A final document was adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015 in New York City, USA. The formal name for the SDGs is: “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and that has been shortened to “2030 Agenda.” SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) have 17 goals and there are 169 targets for these 17 SDGs. The UN led process involved its 193 Member States and global civil society. Now let me list out the first 6 SDGs:
Here is a video tell you more about SDGs:

 Goal 1: No Poverty
More than 1 in 5 people live on less than the target figure of RM6 per day.  This money may not be support for human subsistence in one day. In 2013, there is estimate 385 million of children live on less than RM7.60 per day. People live in poverty if they lack basic services such as healthcare, security, and education. It causes most bad effect to children especially education, health, nutrition, and security, impacting emotional and spiritual development.
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Hunger is the leading cause of death in the world. Our planet has provided us with tremendous resources, but there are millions of people weak and in bad health because of having too little food. Goal 2 states that by 2030 we should end hunger and all forms of malnutrition. For me, I think the emphasis of the SDGs should not be on ending poverty by 2030, but on eliminating hunger and under-nutrition by 2025.

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being for People
Over the last 15 years, the number of childhood deaths has been cut in half. This proves that it is possible to win the fight against almost every disease. There are many country does not provide a modern and effective healthcare for their country people. So, the goal for worldwide Good Health is to promote healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone.

Goal 4: Quality Education
Nelson Mandela said before:” Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education is the key of opens a world of opportunities and also liberates the intellect, but now there are still many Africa country did not provide a good education for their country children. By 2030, the goal states that everybody should have the chance to obtain a good education.

Goal 5: Gender Equality
Honestly, I am very interested on this goal. This is because now there is still many country denying women equal rights. You could see there are very few women on every social level especially politic. Besides that, the working income between women and men are almost not the same because the employer thinks that the workload that the boy can do is more than girl. Political, economic and social equality for women will benefit all the world’s citizens. By 2030, the working income for all gender should be the same and there is no more sexism.

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
There are one in three people live without sanitation in the world. This is causing unnecessary disease and death. If we provide affordable equipment and education in hygiene practices, we can stop this senseless suffering and loss of life. Safe drinking water and hygienic toilets protect people from disease and enable societies to be more productive economically. By 2030, water quality can be improve and safe reuse. Besides that, it will expand water and sanitation support to developing countries so that everybody access to safe and affordable drinking water.

Last but not least, there are 11 SDGs left I haven’t explains in this blog. I will continue this topic next week. (••)
